Colin Mercer is taking over the role after a 23 year history of delivering sustainability objectives across multiple AkzoNobel business areas.
Since 2018, he has been the MEA Marine Business Manager – championing environmental sustainability in the Middle East.
His goal is to create a seamless management system for owner partners, which allows them to manage the performance of the vessels while also helping them comply with any pending legislation about EEDI, EEXI, and CII.
Colin comments: “I am absolutely delighted to take on this hugely important role within the AkzoNobel Marine Coatings team at a time of such significant change within the industry.

“The majority of my career within AkzoNobel has been spent within the marine segment, which has provided me with an extensive understanding of our customers’ requirements.
“As the industry faces an ever more stringent regulatory environment our ambition is to provide our owner partners with stand-out, end-to-end support.”
Colin’s appointment follows the recent launch of Intertrac® HullCare.
The industry’s most environmentally sustainable hull management package to date, it offers operators unrivalled fuel and emissions savings, while guaranteeing speed loss of up to 1% over a ten-year period.
Colin adds: “With Intertrac HullCare we have developed an unrivalled hull management system that supports our clients in reducing greenhouse gasses alongside the prevention of transfer of invasive species.
“It is achieved through a combination of high-performance hull coating technology, cutting-edge ROV drones and big data performance monitoring, together with proven hull cleaning techniques – allowing for AkzoNobel to make accurate hull performance decisions with our customers.
“It allows us to pull together the immensely experienced industry experts at AkzoNobel to deliver a world-class program, eliminating stress and sleepless nights for owners when looking at hull performance.”
Among Colin’s top priorities will be a focus on innovation. He adds: “Our focus going forward will be on developing the most innovative sustainable marine industry services in the marketplace.
“The technology in coatings that AkzoNobel manufactures today with world-leading biocide-free systems and anticorrosives will allow for much longer in-service periods between dry dockings – and with HullCare these can be extended further than ever before.
“These innovations will drive down the paint volumes required in operating a vessel over a 10-year period. The main opportunity is to reduce the environmental impacts that we have by lowering VOC consumption, zero biocides leaching into our oceans, and industry-leading speed loss. This will result in lower greenhouse gas emission and a driving force in setting industry standards.
