ANCHORAGE The Alaska Forum, Inc. will be receiving $200,000 in Brownfields grant funding by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Bipartisan Infrastructure Law offers a rare opportunity to build America better. It also means new, high-paying jobs. More than 1,000 individuals will be trained for new jobs as environmental workers by the Brownfields Job Training Grants announced today. said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. This program will directly impact the lives of people, helping to transform communities that are most in need.
Alaska Forum, Inc.Brownfields Job Training funding will be used to train 90 students and to place at least 40 people in environmental jobs. The training program covers 90 hours of environmental skills instruction. This includes basic firefighting, home fuel tanks inspection, and hazardous materials. Students who complete the training can earn up five state certifications and 23 Federal certifications. Alaska Forum offers this training program for students from low-income communities, unemployed, and underemployed across the state.
These grants are funded through the Agency’s Brownfields Job training Program and provide funding to organizations working to create skilled workers in communities where brownfield sites are being assessed, cleaned up, and prepared for reuse. Many barriers to employment are often overcome by individuals who complete a job training program funded through EPA. Many of these people are from historically underserved areas and live in areas that are affected by environmental justice issues.
These organizations offer training and provide certifications to local residents who are unable to fill local jobs with contractors from faraway cities.. Individuals Many graduates graduate with a variety certifications that enhance their marketability and make them more attractive to potential employers. These certifications can help ensure that they are not only able to find long-term work but also increase their marketability. This includes certifications in asbestos and lead abatement, hazardous waste operations, emergency response, environmental sampling, analysis, and other safety and health training.
Bipartisan Infrastructure law (BIL), invests more that $1.5 billion in EPA’s brownfields program. $30 million of this investment will go towards future Brownfields Job Training grants. Over the next five-years, communities, states, or tribes will be able to apply for larger grants to improve and include the environmental curriculum in their existing job training programs. This investment will enable trained individuals to access jobs that are created by brownfields revitalization activities in their communities. EPA expects to grant 50 additional grants to job training organizations with BIL funding starting in fiscal year 2023. Application guidelines will be available in Spring/Summer 2020.
Since its inception in 1998, the Brownfields Job Training Program awarded more than $2.5 million. 352 grants. Training has been completed by more than 19,456 people. 14,560 Individuals have been offered full-time jobs in remediation, safety and health. These people make over $14 an hour on average.
