Alberta Environment notified: Firefighters respond to hazardous material incidents

Emergency crews responded to a hazardous material incident in southeast Edmonton on New Year’s Day.

CTV News was informed by Edmonton Fire Rescue Services that four units and a HAZMAT crew arrived at an industrial area near 48 Street & 68 Avenue at 4:13 p.m.

Crews discovered that a chemical called Boron trichloride was involved and Alberta Environment was notified.

According to EFRS, there are no risks to the public as crews work together to contain and remove the chemical.

Brittany Lewchuk, spokesperson for EFRS, stated that cleanup efforts are being hampered by the chemical’s reaction with snow.

Officials have not reported any injuries.

Lewchuk said that the incident is not related with a semi-truck fire at 68 Avenue or 67 Street on Jan. 1. Emergency crews were also dispatched there.
