The State will use all its power to prevent irresponsible businesses from contaminating the country’s environment.

The Cabinet member mentioned Chimbote Beach’s case, in which he said that “they have made it into a sewer”, referring to irresponsible companies who work without respecting environmental standards and so affect the health of the population.

The Cabinet member also stated that many fishermen are now living in poverty as they are unable to work as much.

“That must be avoided and all the State power should be used to prevent misfortunes from this nature from happening again,” he stated in dialogue with local fishermen.

Repsol continues to fail to clean up guano island

Concerning the progress in the cleanup and remediation of the affected areas he stated that Repsol is not meeting its obligations to restore the environment conditions that existed before the oil spillage.

He warned that “it has done absolutely nothing regarding Islas Guaneras cleanup (Guano islands)”

Minister Montoya reiterated that La Pampilla Refinery operator is setting a bad example for domestic and foreign businesses. He stated that the situation must be corrected so that serious work can be done to prevent the death of guano birds, which are vital for biodiversity.

Jesus Quispe, the Deputy Territorial Governance Ministry Minister, said that solving the environmental disasters is a State priority.

“We work together in solving the problem so that fishermen return to their routines soon,” he said.

Among other officials, Agency for Environmental Assessment and Enforcement – Chief Miriam Alegria (OEFA) was also present at the event.

Oil spill

The ecological catastrophe was caused by the 11,000 barrels of crude petroleum that were spilled at La Pampilla, a maritime terminal owned and operated by Repsol.
