The nation’s largest student-run conference, focused on sustainability returns, was held at Chico State this week for two days. It was virtual in format so that anyone can tune in to more 50 speakers and presenters who share their research, findings, and knowledge.
The 17th annual University of Michigan Alumni Day will be held on Thursday, March 24, as well as Friday, March 25. This is the way to sustainability. Virtual access to the conference for two-days will make it easier to access from anywhere in the world. However this switch is also in keeping with the committee’s commitment towards sustainable practices.
The conference has grown to be a CSU-wide event and the carbon footprint has been significantly reduced by switching to a virtual format, Sara Johnson, conference student coordinator, said.
The theme for this year’s conference is Elevating the Many Voices of Climate Justice. Program content will focus on informing about ethnically diverse communities that have been adversely affected by the climate crisis. The conference seamlessly combines all of the University’s strategic priorities: equity and diversity and inclusion; civic engagement and global participation; and resilient, sustainable systems.
Registration for conferenceThe conference is open to all K12 students, as well as students from any higher education institutioncommunity college or trade school. All others will pay $50 per day or $75 for a full conference.
The two-day conference will feature three keynote speakers:
- Lil Milagro Henriquez will present Growing Resilience for a Climate Challenged Future, a 20 year veteran of environmental justice activism and social activism. It will be held on Thursday, at 9 a.m.
- Robin Wall Kimmerer, mother and scientist, professor, and enrolled member, Citizen Potawatomi Nation will present Braiding Sweetgrass on Thursday at noon
- Tracey Osborne, an associate professor and president in the Management of Complex Systems Department of University of California Merced will present Climate Justice and Higher Education at noon on Friday
There are also four Breakout sessionsTwo additional sessions will be held on Thursday and Friday. 50 presentersThey are willing to share their expertise.
This Way to Sustainability, a nationally recognized student-run conference, focuses on planning for our sustainable future. The conferences aim to educate students, faculty, staff, and community members. They provide attendees the opportunity to network, share, and become more informed about relevant environmental and social problems we all face.
The conference will also feature expertise and experience from a variety presenters in seven tracks: environment, land planning, natural systems; built environments and engineering; health, nutrition, diet, and nutrition; sustainable foods systems and regenerative farming; entrepreneurship, marketing, and supply chain management; social justice and public policy; arts, humanities, and creative expression.
