Youth climate activists organized the multigenerational climate strike at City Hall at 11 a.m. Speakers spoke about the imminent climate crisis and urged lawmakers to make changes.

While students staged a mass school walkout as part of the event, 15-year-old strike organizer Adah Crandall told KOIN 6 News the event was not about skipping class — it was about holding lawmakers accountable.

Crandall stated that young people recognize the need for bold, radical climate action in Portland. But, that’s not what our leaders are doing. “So, we are demanding they take action against climate crisis.”

The youth strike leader claimed she felt compelled to take part in climate activism after seeing the impacts firsthand while a student at Harriet Tubman Mid School. This school became the centre of a climate debate following a planned I-5 expansion that would have a negative impact on the school’s backyard. It was feared that it would increase the campus’s emissions.

Crandall stated that she and other organizers had called for lawmakers to sign a promise committing to work with student activists to combat climate change through policy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Many local lawmakers attended the event. Multnomah County Commissioner Sharon Meieran was among those who signed the pledge.

Meieran, a nurse in the emergency room, said that she was moved to respond to the students’ call for action after recalling the heat dome from last summer.

Meieran stated that “We are facing the highest temperatures ever and saw people die because of climate change.” “This isn’t a concept. It’s real and it’s affecting our communities.

Crandall stated that climate change is not a stigmatized issue for youth. He said, “Adults must stop saying that the kids will save us, and that the kids will stop climate change.” We can’t. We need the support and cooperation of all generations. We need everyone to fight against the climate crisis.

City officials estimate nearly 2,000 marchers made the trek from City Hall across the bridge to the Portland Climate Festival at Revolution Hall Friday afternoon — many of them students who skipped their lessons to try and teach the community one.
