Are fast chargers a sign that phone makers don’t care about the environment?

A pile of boxes for Apple, Samsung, Oppo, and Realme phones.

Smartphone chargers are stronger than ever, and charging times are so short that some phones can charge from 0% up to 100% in as little time as it takes to watch an episode. Rick and Morty. It all happens using a proprietary charging block and cable that come in the box along with your phone.

This is unless you purchase an Apple or Samsung phone. The charger is not included in the box, which both companies claim is a good thing for the environment. Does this mean the firms that include chargers dont care about the environment, or that you — as a buyer who wants to enjoy ultrafast charging speeds — dont either?

Chargers can be removed

Samsung has a section on their website explaining why the charging block and earphones were removed from the boxes for many devices, beginning with the Galaxy S21 series. The Galaxy S22 series has no charging block or earphones. It is also not compatible with the A-Series phones. Rumours are that Samsung’s cheapest M Series phones will not have these features.

Its It is easy to see the logic behind it.Samsung believes that removing earphones/charger plugs from the in-box packaging of our devices can help reduce the e-waste problem. This will also eliminate the need for duplicates.

Apple began removing the charger and earphones in its boxes with the iPhone 12 in 2020 and has spoken about the benefits of shrinking the packaging. It claimed that 70% more products could fit on a shipping container, which, when combined with the removal and recycling of accessories, would reduce carbon emissions to the tune of 2 million metric tons each year. It doesn’t include a charging block with the Apple Watch either.

It is not only environmentally friendly, but also saves money. Apple was able to keep the iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Mini costs lower than the iPhone 11 despite adding 5G technology. Counterpoint Research.

Keep the chargers charged

Why isn’t every phone maker embracing this idea? Many companies, other than Apple and Samsung are using fast-charging systems to differentiate their latest hardware from the rest. It is not possible for Apple or Samsung to match the charging speeds provided Oppo, Realme and Xiaomi.

But is the environmental sacrifice worth the added benefit of a faster charging device? Realme believes that this is a problem that must be looked at in a different light.

Digital Trends was informed by the company via email that they believe sustainability should not be defined as cancellation but rather by offering new solutions using tech innovations. This would allow us to eventually solve the problem without sacrificing customer benefits.

Realme’s 150-watt UltraDart Charging technology was announced at Mobile World Congress 2022. It can charge a battery up to 50% in five minutes and will be available on the Realme GT Neo 3 soon. It will only work if you use the provided charging block and cable.

Madhev Sheth (president of Realmes International Business Group) explained how the company addresses sustainability in other areas.

We are only three years old, but we are making steady progress toward becoming an ecofriendly and sustainable tech player. We aim to have a positive impact on our environment through cutting carbon emissions, and making sustainability more accessible for customers. In an email, he said that he had been exploring many options to make our operations more sustainable and cleaner.

Realme is aiming to reduce carbon emissions from its GT series smartphones 50% by 2020. This will be achieved by minimizing their entire life-cycle carbon footprint. This includes material selection, design, manufacturing, packaging and use, as well as recycling. The GT 2 Pro is first smartphone to use a biopolymer as its entire rear panel. This reduces carbon emissions by 35.5%. This biopolymer produces two kilograms less carbon emissions per kilogram than purely petroleum-based materials. The percentage plastic used in phones packaging has also been reduced, from 21.7% to 0.3%.

Key benefits

Oppo, which is part of the same family that Realme, also includes fast chargers for its smartphones. The Find X5 Pro’s battery can be charged to 50% in 12 minutes, and fully charged in 30 minutes with the included SuperVOOC charger. Realme received the following email from the company in response to the same questions:

Oppo’s proprietary fast-charging technology is a key benefit of Find the X5 pro. This fast charging is extremely convenient and only works with compatible chargers. Oppo strives for added value by including the fast charger inside the box. Through hardware and software optimization, Oppo has worked to increase the life span of Find X5 Pro’s battery to 1600 cycles. This is double the industry standard, which means the device battery will last longer and reduces e-waste.

Xiaomi offers a 120W HyperCharge fast-charging device. This system, like all the others, also requires a block and cable. It’s astonishingly fast and will charge a 5,000mAh battery to full in about 15 minutes. Xiaomi replied to our questions by email

Xiaomi has included and excluded in-box chargers. This is determined case by case. We included chargers for our latest global devices with 120W hypercharge because we believe most users won’t have chargers of this standard. We also have taken steps to be more sustainable, such as reducing the amount of plastic packaging in our smartphone packaging every year since 2020.

Fast chargers and fast charging

Although there has been much debate about whether charging your charger with a charger is as eco-friendly as companies want, the consensus is that it does help. Experts also agree that there are other ways these companies can make a difference. This is why Realme, Oppo and Xiaomi continue to include chargers.

You will also need a special charger if you want to get the most out your faster charging speeds. Samsung charges $50 to charge for its 45W charger, which is required for the fastest charging speeds for the Galaxy S22 Ultra. Apple’s 67W block costs $59. If you buy one of these just to get the fastest speeds the phone’s charging system offers, then has anything really been saved?

If you are considering buying a new phone with a fast charger that is proprietary, you should try to keep it for longer than usual. Also, think about how you can recycle your old device and any peripherals.
