Big Agencies Need Patience as Environmental Equity Rises

President Joe Biden’s governmentwide push to achieve environmental justice is sweeping across agriculture, health, and other departments. These programs complement those at EPA, which has long supported such efforts.

The Department of Agricultures Equity Commission was established to address inequitable treatment of communities with low income. The Department of Health and Human Services’ new Office of Climate Change and Health Equity is a hub that aims to promote more equitable health outcomes and review the regulatory and statutory powers HHS has to reduce barriers to equitable treatment.

The Energy Department is also expanding existing environmental justice efforts.
