Black & Veatch won the Grand Prize in Design for new biological nutrient removal facilities (BNR) designed for the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District. This award was also presented in commemoration to the 50th anniversary the 1972 Clean Water Act. The company also designed a new water treatment plant. Biosolids and Energy Recovery FacilityIrvine Ranch Water District (IRWD), received an Honor Award in Design.
Both projects combine science and engineering to achieve holistic and progressive resource management. They also demonstrate excellence in water management by water utilities, according to James H. Clark, senior vice-president with Black & VeatchShe was also the project manager for both award winning projects.
Regional San is able to comply with California effluent regulations and preserve a vital water supply source resource. The Biosolids and Energy Recovery Facility (MWRP) at the Michelson Water Recycling Plant produces a Class A product that can be used as fertilizer and efuel and generates the energy needed for IRWD.
Northern California is home to the New BNR facilitiesThey are the heart of the $1.7 billion upgrade of the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, also known as the EchoWater Project. These facilities have virtually eliminated ammonia from the water and significantly reduced nitrogen in the wastewater discharge, strengthening California’s resilience to the SacramentoSan Joaquin River Delta, a vital environmental resource.
Based on a full-year of operation, the BNR plants have performed admirably. They have achieved a high degree of treatment while producing a stable effluent which has met design expectations, according to William Yu, Senior Civil Engineer with Regional San. This past October, A record-breaking wet-weather event produced more than 500 million gallons per hour(MGD), into the plant. The facilities showed great flexibility in handling extreme events and continued to discharge high quality effluent.
IRWD added a new, stateoftheart Biosolids & Energy Recovery Facility to its existing water recycling facility in Southern California. This was to enhance its resource-recycling capabilities. The new facility converts solids obtained from the water recycling process at MWRP in to Class A biosolids which can be used for fertilizer and efuel.
Jose Zepeda, IRWD director for recycling operations, oversees the facility. He said that they were making good use the by-products from the treatment and disposal of what people commonly consider waste. This reflects IRWD’s ongoing commitment to advancing environmentally-sustainable treatment practices while still providing cost-effective and safe services to our community.
