Bradgate Park receives 17,000 after city science firm pays for breaking environmental rules

As part of a community-pay-back scheme, a company that failed to comply with environmental regulations donated 17,600 to Bradgate Park.

Trafalgar Scientific’s cash goes to the Bradgate Park Trusts Jubilee Woodlands project to plant more trees at this cherished Leicestershire beauty spot.

The Environment Agency found the firm in Rushey Mead in Leicester and cited it for not following the rules. It stated that the company had failed sufficiently to recycle and recover packaging waste at its Waterside Road location.

The agency demanded that the company, which makes equipment for science labs, do things differently.

Companies can pay the EUs for local environment projects to make up the environmental damage they have done, rather than being prosecuted and fined by courts.

Trafalgar Scientific was also required to pay the Environment Agency’s investigation, administration, and legal costs.

Jake Richardson is a senior technical officer at the Environment Agency. He said, “We are pleased that Trafalgar Science has now been working in accordance to the regulations.”

Enforcement Undertakings allow businesses to address past non-compliance with the Packaging Regulations. They provide a series of actions to ensure future compliance and financial support for a suitable environmental project.

The packaging regulations are designed to reduce the amount packaging waste that ends up in landfills by requiring businesses to contribute financially to the recovery and recycling.

This enforcement method is being used more frequently by the Environment Agency in cases of restoration or enhancement of the environment, improvement of practices by the offending company, and future compliance with environmental requirements.

“But, we will continue to pursue criminal prosecutions where appropriate.”

The Jubilee Woodland Project aims to plant more trees to absorb greenhouse gas, create new habitats for animals, and increase education by educating local residents about caring for the environment.

James Dymond, director of Bradgate Park Trust, stated that the funding from the enforcement undertaking would be used to plant a new area for parkland tree planting adjacent to our Hallgates Car Park.

“This will include fencing, new hedgerows and field margins as well as interpretation.

The Environment Agency enforces many environmental regulations including the Producer Responsibility Obligations Regulations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 2007.
