Maersk is currently exploring various options to achieve its 2030 goal to have at least 30% of its air cargo use SAF. When looking for sustainable solutions to decarbonise logistics, partnerships are crucial. No company can do it all alone.
“If we want to see the impact of green energy in aviation happening already in this decade it is essential to be able now to meet our customers’ needs.” This agreement is a good starting point to help us create the market demand necessary to accelerate the much-needed transition to green energy in aviation.
Torben Bengtsson
A.P., Global Head of Air & LCL Moller -Maersk
It is crucial to take bold action to decarbonize aviation and reduce the environmental impact of logistics. Maersk is currently investigating different routes to source sufficient SAF. However the company will use its efforts in green fuel research and sourcing to secure sustainable solutions to our customers in air cargo.
Already back on December 1, 2021, Maersk committed to pay the green premium for SAF-powered air cargo as part of Eco-Skies, a first-of-its-kind program involving leading global corporations working with United Airlines to help power flying in a more sustainable way. This program can help reduce environmental impact and make sustainable flying a standard.
Maersks’ air emissions account for less than 1%, but they will increase as a result of our customers’ growth. Maersk is an international integrator of container logistics and is well aware of the environmental challenges associated with airfreight. However, air freight is clearly a key enabler for Maersk customers in obtaining the flexibility they require for their global supply chains. This is why we believe this is a must-do.
Maersk’s strategic objective is to achieve climate neutrality. On Air, Maersk has similar ambitions as on Ocean, including forwarding business where the company is involved with carriers that offer SAF-based (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) solutions as well as own fleet where Maersk is committed to explore green fuels for the Star Air operated fleet of aircraft in line with IATA and ICAO guidance.

Original report: Duurzamer vliegen via RTHA met Fly on SAF
Eerste Nederlandse luchthaven met Fly on SAF

Original report: Pratt & Whitney Awarded Department of Energy Project to Develop Hydrogen Propulsion Technology
The U.S. Department of Energy has selected Pratt & Whitney to develop novel, high efficiency hydrogen-fueled propulsion technology in commercial aviation as part of DoEs Advanced Research Projects Agency Energy (ARPA-E).
The Hydrogen Steam Injected InterCooled Turbine Engine Project (HySIITE), which will use liquid hydrogen combustion and water vapour recovery, will achieve zero in-flight carbon dioxide emissions. It will also reduce nitrogen-oxide (NOx), and fuel consumption by upto 35 percent for next-generation single-aisle aircraft.
This is a great opportunity to begin developing key technologies that could make the industry’s first hydrogen steam injected, cross-cooled engine a reality. Geoff Hunt, senior vice President, Engineering and Technology at Pratt & Whitney, said, “This truly is an exciting chance to start developing these key technologies.” Pratt & Whitney has been innovating cutting-edge technologies for aircraft engines for nearly 100 years. We are delighted to be working on the next great technology for aviation.
The HySIITE engine will burn hydrocarbons in a thermodynamic engine cycle. This cycle incorporates steam injection to drastically reduce NOx emissions, which is a greenhouse gas. HySIITE’s semi-closed system architecture will achieve a higher thermal efficiency than fuel cells and lower total operating costs than drop in sustainable aviation fuels. This is the first collaboration between Pratt & Whitney & ARPA-E.
Pratt & Whitney has a rich history of hydrogen-fueled propulsion. Graham Webb is chief sustainability officer at Pratt & Whitney. Partnerships with public agencies like the Department of Energy are vital to the development and maturation of technologies that could have an impact on aviation’s environmental footprint.
