Earth Day 2022 will highlight the crucial role CEC has played in the region over the past 50 years. The climate crisis has worsened in the two years since we last gathered in person to celebrate Earth Day. It is urgent to work together and recommit towards finding a better way forward. We created a Climate Leadership Summit as part of the festival to provide a platform for climate activists, social change agents, and others to help accelerate progress.

Kathi King (Director of Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival) said, “We are delighted to provide a space where we can come together in face and celebrate amazing artists and youth activists as well as community efforts.” This type of cross-pollination can be crucial for collective action.

About CECs Santa Barbara Earth Day

Santa Barbara is widely recognized as the birthplace for Earth Day. Its involvement began with the 1969 oil spillage off its coast. A local group of concerned citizens began to discuss a new way of looking at the environment. Senator Gaylord Nelson visited Santa Barbara during that time to see the oil spillage damage. He returned to Washington, D.C. and introduced a bill declaring April 22 as a national day of celebration for the earth. The environmental movement grew over the next few decades, including CEC. Led by a group of forward-thinking youth and elders, CEC incorporated in the spring of 1970 and its first act as a new nonprofit was to hold an Earth Day celebration  a one block long teach-in between State St. and Chapala St. along Anapamu. Similar events were held all across the country. Twenty million citizens were concerned. We know that every day is Earth Day and that special events such as this help bring people together to remind us to tread lightly on the earth.
