Kolkata: Sivabrata Chaitterjee, a pioneer in environmental activism in Bengal, has died in Kolkata on Saturday. He was 93.
His landmark status report and policy paper on dangerous chemicals was written by a chemical engineer. This document was the foundation of the Environment Protection Act (86).
Chatterjee was associated since inception with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the ministry for environment. He was the first to measure ambient noise pollution levels in the city in 1970s. He also protested the city’s declining quality of air through numerous writings.
Even in his 90s, he was still ramrod straight. He used to tell people not to worry if they expressed concern about his health. He used to point at his head and say, “I have embedded solar cells.” He would, until the onset of the pandemic infected, follow every environmental case in court and walk to newspapers offices to offer support and words of encouragement to journalists writing on environmental subjects.
Chatterjee was persistent in his efforts to get journalists to write about environmental issues that made the earth less habitable. He used to say that the Bhopal gas disaster had shown him how man was the greatest enemy of humanity.
