CHENNAI – Former UN Environment Programme Executive Director Erik Solheim stated that Tamil Nadu should lead green energy.
China currently produces 80% of the solar panels in the world. India should develop a large industry that makes solar panels for India and the rest of the world in the future. Solheim said that it would be a great opportunity to host these industries in TN.
He said that I have a lot of interest to India and Tamil Nadu because they have a huge role in making the planet greener. This includes electric vehicles and green hydrogen.
Solheim was in Chennai to meet with government officials and give lectures in colleges on climate change. Palanivel Thiaga Rajan (state finance minister) met Solheim to discuss the steps that TN could take to harness green energy.
Solheim said that one of the suggestions was to create an environment advisory panel.
First, I believe we need to shift our thinking. We still believe that nature must be destroyed to improve our living standards. But that is not true.
Solheim was also Norway’s former minister for environment and international development. During this time, he created the Nature Diversity Act, which many consider the most important piece in environmental legislation in Norway in the last 100-years.
Solheim visited the Pallikaranai dumpyard with schoolchildren, where he spoke about the importance of conserving nature.
Solheim said that TN’s government has begun to reclaim dump sites. This is a great example environmental policy change. It opens up possibilities for waste recycling. You can reclaim dump yards to create parks, wetlands, or even museums.
Solheim stated that he expected to see large-scale investment in the industry. All buses in Mumbai are expected to be electrified within the next few months. This is a huge opportunity for TN. We are making progress in the right direction, although there is still much to be done in terms electric mobility, solar energy and green hydrogen. I see the government putting in place the right policies to allow this transformation to occur. You can see a strong commitment to green development.
Solheim stated that a combination electric power for lighter cars and green hydrogen to power heavy vehicles is the best solution.
Over 80% of new cars in my country were electric last year. But heavy trucks, shipping, as well as the aviation industry, require green hydrogen. It is why I believe that green energy requires a combination of both.
