Chicago will not permit a metal shredder in a community contaminated by industrial pollution to be set up. This would end a long-running environmental justice struggle between residents of Chicago and a recycling company.

Friday, May 5, 2012: Chicago Department of Public Health deniedReserve Management Groups Southside Recycling Project permits will be issued in an area of the city’s Southeast Side.

Community members organized a three-year campaign against the plant. They petitioned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to examine the permit that would have allowed the plant’s installation in a predominantly Latino neighborhood.
