Climate or environmental projects: Nearly 12m available

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has made 11.7 million available to support environmental projects by the research community in order to address climate change and other complex environmental issues.

Laura Burke, EPA director general said: “EPA-funded research is essential to improving national understanding of our environment, the challenges it faces and responses to these challenges.

“The EPA funds research that seeks to address knowledge gaps, provide robust evidence to inform policy and support the implementation of environmental policies in Ireland.

“This supports an evidence-led approach to policy making based on excellent science and information.

The EPA is seeking proposals for four interconnected research areas that highlight the importance and value of a healthy, clean, and well-protected environment to improve health, well-being, and quality life.

Criteria for environmental projects

These topics include the following interrelated and overarching themes:

  • Climate science, adaptation, scenarios and resilience; policy response
  • Improved knowledge of greenhouse gas (GHG), as well as air emission inventories
  • Industrial regulation and assessment of health;
  • Radiation, hazardous substances, and chemicals in the environment
  • Innovative approaches to environmental monitoring
  • Assessment of land use and environmental risk;
  • Opportunities and obstacles in climate action and the circular economy
  • Resource substitution and efficiency.

The Department of Environment, Climate and Communications funded the EPA Research Programme, a Government of Ireland initiative.

According to the EPA this research call is meant to support the development and implementation Irish environmental policies.

Dr. Alice Wemaere, EPA research manager, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with a number of organisations, including the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine [DAFM]; The Geological Survey Ireland [GSI]Met ireann and to co-fund research on environmental issues and address them.

“We are also pleased to announce two open topics covering the potential for use of satellite data in environmental monitoring and assessment and the role of the environment in development and transmission of antimicrobial resistance.

This research call is intended to support the implementation and maintenance of environmental policies in Ireland.

  • Climate Action Plan
  • Framework for National Climate Adaption;
  • Strategies and Action Plans for Circular Economy
  • Biodiversity National Strategy Plan
  • National Peatlands Strategy
  • National Radon Control Strategy
  • National Land Use Evidence Review
  • UN Sustainable Development Goals Implementation Plan;
  • National Boglands Rehabilitation and Rehabilitation Scheme
  • Policies in the water- and air-protection areas.

The EPA is responsible for managing an environmental research programme, which provides scientific support to environmental policy development, implementation, and broader decision-making.

The EPA has funded research and development in Ireland since 1994. It currently funds more than 200 projects.

You must register on the EPAs online Grant Application/Project Management system to be eligible for funding. The deadline for submissions for EPA funding is June 1, 2022.
