Composting can help your garden grow and the environment by reducing food scrap in landfills

SHORELINE Composting could be the solution to your greenest lawn, beautiful flowers, and the healthiest vegetable gardens.

Terri Cain of the Guilford Sustainable Task Force said that compost can be placed around native plants or around any landscaping plants.

She said that this is a way to improve the soil.

Guilford Sustainable Task Force and South Central Regional Council of Governments have teamed up for the second year to offer limited-time discounts on composters. Orders must be received by Thursday, April 21.

Matt Hoey, Guilford First Selectman said that composting benefits the environment as well as solid waste management.

Guilford, a coastal community, is facing a lot of uncertainty in regards to sustainability, sea-level rise, climate change, and the impending crisis in solid waste management. It is crucial to recognize how small changes in thinking or behavior can have big effects.

Cain, a UConn master-composter, agreed with this sentiment.

She stated that the state throws away approximately 500,000 tons of food waste each year. This could be composted and kept from our landfills. We all know we have to reduce waste.

Cain suggested several ways people could do this. One, reduce food waste and be aware of it. Two, compost what you would otherwise put into the waste stream, into landfills.

She spoke about the additional benefits of composting.

It protects the climate, it reduces climate change, and it saves money for you and your family, she stated.

She said that if all food waste is dumped into the landfill, it can create methane, which is a greenhouse gases. This composter can help you compost properly and reduce methane.

Cain said that composting can become a way of living once it is started at home.

It’s easy to make composting a daily habit once you have a composting bin set up at your home. It’s as easy to put food scraps into your kitchen compost bin as to toss them in the trash.

Composting is the controlled breakdown of organic matter. It can be household waste like grass clippings and leaves, as well as food waste like apple cores and eggs shells. You cannot compost meat.

It is gratifying to know that you are recapturing food nutrients which will be returned to soil, she stated. It is satisfying knowing that you are doing positive things to benefit your community, the earth, and your loved ones.
