Activity Friendly Environments allow people of all abilities and ages to enjoy safe and easy walking, biking, rolling, and other forms active transportation and recreation.

Access to physical activity

There are many opportunities for people to exercise. These include sidewalks, multi-use trails, multi-use bicycle facilities, on-street bike facilities, multi-use paths, parks, open spaces, and recreational facilities. Regular physical activity is good for your health. Physical activity (PDF).include disease prevention, better mental health, and effective management chronic conditions like hypertension and arthritis.

Approaches to the combined built environment

Environments that support healthy communities are created by the development of community masterplans that inform transportation systems as well as land use decisions. These environments encourage mixed use development and a connected grid street system, which allows homes, businesses schools, parks, parks, and shops to be close together and easily accessible for pedestrians, bicyclists, and others with limited mobility.

Complete Streets

“Complete Streets,” a concept that roadways should not be only designed for cars, but all users. This concept must be considered by local governments with Complete Streets ordinances when they construct new streets or retrofit existing roads. These ordinances are eligible for the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board. Complete Streets Award.

We are currently accepting nominations to be new Complete Streets Award winners. Any city, county, tribe or tribe that has a current Complete Streets ordinance, and has a history of planning, building, and maintaining Complete Streets, is eligible.
