Due to strong wind warnings issued by the National Weather Service, the El Paso Environmental Services Department has suspended curbside collection of blue recycling bins scheduled for Tuesday.
The region is expected to see winds gusting up to 60 mph by Tuesday 9 p.m.
Weather conditions can make it unsafe for both the public and the collection crews. In addition, recycling bins are lighter than trash bins because of their contents. They are also more likely to tipover on windy days, spilling recyclables all over the neighborhood, according to a news release from the department.

As scheduled, gray trash bins can be collected. Residents are asked to keep their gray trash cans out at the curb until they are emptied.
Ellen Smyth, Environmental Services Managing Director, stated in the release that safety of our employees and the public is our top priority. We ask for your cooperation and understanding. Customers who were scheduled for their recycling bins to be collected today will have their bins empty in two weeks on their next regular recycling collection day.
The department will monitor the weather conditions this week in order to determine the impact on collections.
If winds cause reduced visibility, the Greater El Paso Landfill may be closed early Tuesday.

Windy days: Tips for recycling and trash collection
Bring in the bins: After they have been empty, bring them in. This will reduce the likelihood that they will be blown over, which can pose dangers for pedestrians as well as motorists.
When emptying bins, hold on to the lid. If the lid is blown open by the wind, injuries could occur.
