Earth Hour is Saturday, so turn off all unnecessary lights and appliances

Expo 2020 Dubai will feature a special Switch Off Parade led by Emirates Nature-WWF (the region representative for WWF), also on Saturday night.

The procession will travel through Expo 2020 starting at 8.30pm at the Peru Pavilion in Mobility District and ending at 9.30pm at UK Pavilion. The organizers stated that 60+ pavilions will participate in a symbolic switch-off at intervals of one second, for the duration Earth Hour. This is to honor the iconic global event.

Shaping our Future is the theme for Earth Hour. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer (CEO and managing director of DEWA) noted that Dubai was the first Arab country to participate in Earth Hour. This reflects the emirates’ keenness to raise awareness about the dangers of carbon dioxide emissions and limit consumption and waste of resources.

Al Tayer stated that DEWA plays a leading role in supporting national as well as global efforts to sustain the environment. This is due to our vision to be a globally recognized sustainable innovator corporation and to help achieve the wise leadership vision of Dubai becoming a sustainable city. DEWA claims that Earth Hour Dubai has made cumulative savings of up to 3.12GWh of electricity, and reduced 1,607 tonnes carbon emissions since its inception in 2008. DEWA also launched numerous conservation initiatives, programmes, and events. These efforts led to cumulative savings of upto 2.2 TWh of electricity, 5.6 billion gallons water, or equivalent to Dh1.2billion savings and a reduction of 1.1 million tonnes carbon dioxide emissions between 2012 and 2021.

Khawla al Mehairi, executive Vice President of Strategy and Government Communications, DEWA, said that everyone should adopt simple daily behavior such as using sun power, energy conservation and using electric vehicles. This will reduce our carbon footprint and ensure a better future for the generations to come.

DEWA has also encouraged the public to use social networks to show their support for the environment. You can use the hashtags: #EarthHourDubai #EarthHourUAE and #Connect2Earth.
