EDF urges Senate Environment and Public Works Committee support for highly qualified nominees to crucial Environmental Protection Agency positions

EDF announced support for two highly qualified candidates to the Environmental Protection Agency positions ahead of tomorrow’s confirmation hearings at Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.

David Uhlmann is being considered for the EPAs Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Office. Dr. Carlton Waterhouse is being considered for the position of Assistant Administrator for Office of Land and Emergency Management. This office is responsible for protecting the environment and public health from toxic spillages and releases of hazardous substances. Below are bios of both candidates.

Elizabeth Gore, Senior Vice-President, Political Affairs, stated that Dr. Waterhouse and Mr. Uhlman are outstanding nominees. Their careers are marked by integrity, commitment, and results that protect families from pollution and advance environmental justice. We urge the Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW) to confirm their nominations.

David UhlmannNominated to be the EPA assistant administrator for enforcement and compliance assurance. This official is responsible to ensure that federal law violators are held accountable. David Uhlmann spent 17 years as a federal prosecutor. He was Chief of the Environmental Crimes Section at both the Republican and Democratic Administrations of the United States Department of Justice. He is familiar with federal environmental enforcement and compliance. He is fair-minded and works well alongside a broad range industry, government, environmental professionals.

Dr. Carlton WaterhouseNominated to serve as the Assistant Administrator for Office of Land and Emergency Management. Dr. Waterhouse is an internationally recognized expert in environmental law and justice. He holds a Ph.D. degree in social ethics. Waterhouse has a wide range of academic degrees, including degrees in science, law, and theology. Dr. Waterhouse has been a champion of environmental justice, both during his tenure at the University of Indiana School of Law as well as at Howard University, where he established the Environmental Justice Center to allow law students to provide legal advocacy support to communities affected by pollution. Dr. Waterhouse’s unique combination of experience, vision and skills is exactly what EPA needs at this crucial moment in history.
