CAIRO – 21 February 2022: Egyptian Minister of Environment Yassmine Fouad discussed on Monday with US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry the national strategy against climate change set to be launched within the coming days.
Kerry and Fouad met in Cairo to discuss the national climate change strategy, which is based upon the two axes mitigation and adaptation.
Earlier on Monday, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry Monday launched the US-Egypt Climate Working Group after their meeting at the Foreign Ministry premises in Cairo.
The remarks were made by the Egyptian minister during a joint press conference with the US ambassador at the conclusion of their earlier Monday session of talks.
Shoukry stated that the group was formed following the US-Egypt Strategic Dialogue, held in November of last year.
Kerry made his second visit to Cairo as the top diplomat since he assumed this post.
Shoukry said that climate changes are a shared priority of Washington and Cairo, noting that Egypt is preparing for hosting the UN Climate Change Conference, COP27 in 2022.
The top diplomat stated that Egypt will lead international efforts to combat climate change in the future stage..
He stated that Kerry’s talks focused on the goals of the upcoming COP27. He stressed that Egypt would continue to exert maximum effort at all levels to reduce greenhouse gas emission and support adaptation to the negative effects of climate change..
Shoukry said that COP27 will also deal with finances to enable developing countries comply with the Paris Agreement..
