Strong start for Alberta’s environment ministers UCP nomination challenger’s campaign

It appears that Tim Hovens campaign against Jason Nixon for the United Conservative Party nomination at RimbeyRocky mountain HouseSundre got off on a strong start last week at the rural community hall in the Central Alberta riding.

Leastways, a photo that I discovered in my inbox shows the former Clearwater County municipality councillor speaking to at least 80 people at the James River Community Hall, about 14 kilometres north from Sundre.

We are not talking about a densely populated area. Therefore, it is probably fair that there was a significant turnout.

Nixon is the most powerful minister in Premier Jason Kenneys cabinet. Mr. Kenneys, the UCP house leader, is also Nixon. de factoCampaign manager for his efforts at holding onto his job at the upcoming leadership review. This could prove to be a major distraction not only for the honourable RimbeyRocky Mountain HouseSundre member but for the entire party.

To add to the potential troubles faced by Nixon, who is environment minister, the Kenney Government has two reports on  the future of coal development in Alberta awaiting release that are unlikely to please anyone but Australian coal magnates.

Hoven, who Eckville raises beefHe seems to have recently cleaned up his Facebook pages, but His Twitter accountIt seems he runs somewhere in the right, possibly a lot to the right of Nixon who is not exactly flirting to the NDP.

Hovens supporters wrote the private letter to one of them MLAs accountable Jason Nixon will likely replace Jason Kenney in any future UCP leadership race. This is via the Facebook group. We know from the past two year that this will not bring us the change we need to Alberta. Jason Nixon is Jason Kenney.

If Hovens insurgency is part a larger trend that appears to be underway in rural Alberta, it could spell trouble for the UCP in next year’s general election.

This almost certainly means Nixon will have a difficult spring. If Hoven doesn’t beat Nixon, Nixon will likely try to find another way.

As Blogger Dave Cournoyer pointed it outWednesday saw the UCP open candidate nominations in four ridings. The UCP had to do it quickly, with a Feb. 28 deadline to allow candidates to submit their names.

This will make it difficult to sign up new members for candidates like Hoven in time to vote in the nomination elections.

If that fails, Nixon may try to find a way to disqualify his opponent by accusing him, among other things, of campaigning alongside Central Peace MLA Todd Loewen. Loewen was first UCP MLA, to call for Kenneys resignation. Banished to the Independent benchesfor his disloyalty towards the leader in May of last year.

Nixon might try that, but it will cause uproar at Kenneys leadership reviews in Red Deer and perhaps even cast shade on the vote.

Paul Champ, a lawyer, warns truckers not to expect long-term, costly litigation

Paul Champ, an Ottawa lawyer, has warned truck drivers who block streets in Ottawa to be prepared for lengthy and costly litigation in his class action lawsuit seeking tens or millions of dollars in damages due to their occupation of the city.

Champ filed the lawsuit Feb. 4, before a national emergency was declared. The truckers seemed to be in control of their trucks, and were being served coffee and donuts by obsequious Conservative MPs.

That was back then. Now it is.

It is time to go home. Champ spoke out in a videoThe protest leader was arrested by police and targeted truck owners. I strongly advise you to hire your own attorney when you return home. You can get independent legal advice.

He continued to speak for the organizers. You’ve been led down a path which will unfortunately have serious financial consequences.

If you do decide to hire a lawyer I recommend that you tell the lawyer to reach me. We are available to help those who contact us early in the process of settling their case. This does not mean that the truck will leave.

Patrick Brazeau, the loser in the famous boxing match against PM, tweets his respect

Several times in the wake of the troubling events in Ottawa, far-right opponents to Justin Trudeau indulged in their obsessions about the prime minister’s appearance, former profession, and fashion sense. I have recalled his 2012 charity boxing match against Senator Patrick Brazeau.

You don’t need to see the fight if that is not your thing. Just listen the music. Youtube video. It could be a prequel to how Trudeau will be seen after the Freedom Convoy crisis has settled.

Yesterday afternoon Senator Brazeau tweetedHis respect for the PM. This man was my opponent 10 years ago. It hurt, it hurt, but in life we must respect our adversaries. Although I may not always agree with him, I still respect him. He is our Prime Minister. Let us support Canada!

A fifth-degree blackbelt in karate offers some advice. You should always bet on the boxer in a match between a black belt in karate and a boxer, especially if the boxer isn’t allowed kick. While you won’t win every time, you will make money over the long-term.
