Environment Canada forecasting white Christmas for B.C.

For the stretch of Highway 3 that runs between Paulson Summit, Kootenay Pass, a winter storm warning was issued

Expect snowfalls between 25-35 centimetres by Tuesday night. Heavy snow is possible Monday afternoon to Tuesday morning. On Tuesday morning, snow accumulations of approximately 15 cm will occur.

After an earlier rock slide, a section of Highway 3 in B.C.’s Southern Interior was reopened

“The atmosphere becomes unstable Tuesday afternoon when convective heavy flurries are expected,” Environment Canada said in a press release.

The national weather agency explained that convective flurries are periods of intense snow and during these times, there’s more uncertainty in the snowfall accumulations. According to the agency, Tuesday night could see additional snowfall of 10 to 20 cm.

The snow levels for this period range from 1,000 to 1,200m. Snow will fall above snow levels, and rain showers will fall at lower elevations.

All of these factors mean that road conditions could be difficult for motorists.
