On Earth Day, EPA New England opens nominations for annual Environmental Merit Awards

Vermont Business Magazine The U.S. Environmental Protection Agencys New England regional office will accept nominations as part of Earth Day celebrations. These nominations will be used to recognize New England individuals, organizations, and businesses for their environmental achievements over the past year. EPA New England will accept nominations until Monday, May 16th 2022 for the 2022 Environmental Merit Awards.

EPA is proud to share our efforts with citizens every day to create a brighter and healthier future for all. We are pleased to announce the annual solicitation for nominations for the 2022 EPA New England Environmental Merit Awards. New England is blessed to have intelligent, innovative citizens and organizations who make a difference in creating a healthier and cleaner environment. Since 1970, these awards have been presented annually by EPA. Past recipients include scientists, community activists and representatives from non-profits. The winners will be selected by an independent EPA panel based on the environmental issue being addressed, the actions taken to address it and the extent to which the positive effects can be measured and sustained.

The mission of EPAs is to protect human health as well as the environment. Nominations should describe how nominees’ work relates to EPA’s mission of reducing pollution in the air, water and land. The agency also seeks out innovative and replicable activities or projects.

Annual awardsTraditionally, the trophies are presented in four categories at a September ceremony.

  • individual;
  • business, industry, trade and professional organization
  • local, state, or federal government
  • Academic, community or non profit organization.

Lifetime Achievement AwardsThese awards are reserved for those who have shown a commitment to environmental and health issues that has led to lasting, measurable and sustainable results over a career and a lifetime.

The EPA will also award theAward for Environmental Health in ChildrenA person or group whose efforts are outstanding in protecting children from environmental health hazards.

The last award category is theIra Leighton in Service to StatesEnvironmental Merit Award. This award recognizes an individual/organization that has made a significant contribution to the advancement of state and federal partnerships to address environmental issues in New England. This award is given to a collaboration that includes the New England Interstate Water Pollution Control Commission and the Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management, as well as the Northeast Waste Management Officials Association and New England State Environmental Commissioners.
