Today’s meeting will be held in Brussels by the EU climate and environment ministers.
Ministers will discuss the EU’s climate package Fit for 55, battery regulations earlier this year, and the Union’s new soil strategy.
The Fit for 55 package included obligations within the EU Climate Law to reduce net global warming gas emissions by at most 55% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels. Discussions today will focus on the sufficiency of the package to achieve these objectives as well as how it can be strengthened in the years ahead. CO2 One proposal is to establish standards for vehicles.
Another option is the new battery regulations, which would promote a sustainable and circular industry of batteries while simultaneously ensuring high standards for environmental and health protection.
The ministers will develop strategies for protecting soil, restoration, and sustainable use to ensure healthy EU ecosystems.
These new regulations and the EU’s track record in meeting its climate goals suggest that the EU will continue to work towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030, given the new regulations.
