Article content

BERLIN Germany’s greenhouse gas emissions increased by just under 5% last season compared to 2020, UBA, the federal environment agency, said in Monday’s annual report, which was seen by Reuters. This is because Europe’s largest economy has recovered from the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the agency, emissions were still down by 39% when compared with 1990 levels last year.

The report will accelerate plans by the three-way government led by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, to almost double renewable energy’s share to about 80% by 2030. They also plan to wean the economy of oil and gas imports originating from Russia after President Vladimir Putin ordered an invasion of Ukraine. (Written by Joseph Nasr, Edited By Jan Harvey
