GTA will see’significant’ rains with the possibility of freezing rains.

Environment Canada has issued a special Weather Statement Wednesday for the Greater Toronto Area. This statement describes “significant” rainfall and the risk of freezing rain.

According to the federal weather agency, there will be periods of rain Wednesday morning through Wednesday afternoon. Total rainfall amounts could reach 20 millimetres.

Environment Canada warns that freezing rain is possible, which can lead to icy surfaces and water pooling on roads.

Brian Owsiak, a meteorologist at Environment Canada, said that some areas could become slippery due to the freezing rain.

“People will need to slow down and be more cautious than they used to.”

According to the agency, wind speeds will reach 70 km per hour.

“Temperatures will rise above freezing mark this afternoon ending any risk of freezing rain,” the weather bureau stated.

Environment Canada stated that the freezing rain will likely affect areas north of Highway 401, while areas near Lake Ontario will likely remain above freezing and receiverain.
