Guest column: An opportunity to lead on the environment in Valparaiso

Not all is doom. Valparaiso has seen some innovative ideas, such as the Calumet Ave and Silhavy Road bioswales and native plants that absorb more rainwater. They also slow down the release of water into ground. Matt McBain, the Valparaiso’s city arborist, has been working to improve and increase the tree canopy. This provides natural air conditioning and absorbs groundwater. It also lowers utility bills, increases property valuations, and slows traffic. He has also been involved with the Central Neighborhood Association’s (CNA), annual tree planting celebration. It was initiated by Bill Durnell, then President of CNA, with Mike Pancini.
