Healthy Archuleta to Host Community Conversation about ‘PSE’ and Built Environment

Rose Chavez

Tomorrow, Thursday April 14, from 2 – 3 pm, Healthy Archuleta (dba FS/FE Food Coalition) will host a community conversation that will explore the role of the built environment as an element of PSE in nutrition security and will provide case studies to illustrate this approach to community health.

Health programs have been educating people for many years about the importance of changing their behavior to improve their health. While this is a key factor in promoting our health, there are other factors that can impact our overall health. Health is more than just about your attitude and knowledge. It is more than just knowing how to be healthy. We also need practical, easily accessible healthy options.

That’s where the emphasis on policy, systems and environment (PSE) changes comes in. Because our environment can influence how we live, we are more likely make healthy choices when healthy options exist. It is about having healthy, nutritious, safe, and affordable food that is available to all members of our community. The potential for policy, systems, and environmental (PSE), factors to support health-promoting options that are relevant, responsive, feasible, and healthy for all community members is there. These factors include the laws, rules, regulations and environments that could have an impact on our behavior choices and the overall well-being in our community.

Ynke and Liz Young-Winne from the Prevention Services Division of Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment will be joining us to share their ideas as we work together and learn about nutrition security and health equity in Archuleta County.
