How to make a safe outdoor environment for your cat – The Mercury News

Dear Critter Corner: My cat keeps running around the yard, and I think he just wants outside. Is it possible to take my cat outside?

Cats get a lot of mental stimulation from being outside, so it can be a treat to let your cat explore the yard. Let’s create an outdoor space for your cat that allows them to use all their senses in a safe, fun environment. Cats love exploring the outdoors in a catio. This is an outdoor version for a cat enclosure. Catios are located on the patio next to your home, or in your yard. There is an above ground tunnel that connects the catio to your home. This can give your cat a place to explore the outdoors, get fresh air, climb up on various perches and interact safely with other outdoor creatures (like birds or squirrels) from afar.

A catio may not be possible for your cat. You might consider training your cat how to walk on a collar or harness. There are many styles and fabrics that might be suitable for your cat, depending on their body type. You should measure your cat first to ensure the correct fit. If you are patient and offer tasty rewards, training a cat to wear a harness can be done in just a few sessions. Let your cat explore the harness by themselves, then let it rest on your cat’s chest. This will help to make them more comfortable with it. You can then give your cat a treat by placing it near the harness. Next, let your cat poke their heads through the harness. Your cat will become more comfortable with the harness, so you can continue rewarding them with tasty treats. Your cat will start by walking around the house wearing the harness, and then eventually with the leash. Before exploring the yard, take your cat along for the ride.
