BATHINDA – The South Asia Peace Action NetworkSAPANIn a recent virtual session,, the organization called for concerted efforts to address the South Asia climate crisis.
South Asia’s prominent environmentalists, climate activists and others expressed their opinions on how we can all work together to combat the crisis that is affecting so many people around the globe. It was felt that although activism against their governments is being witnessed in, it is not being recognized in. European NationsIt is being stressed everywhere that climate crisis quickly becomes climate emergency and that urgent and real actions are required to combat it. However such efforts are not being seen by South Asia, which too is suffering from the effects of the crisis.
It was stressed that governments need to be reached out for drastic measures to combat climate change.
Participants endorsed a resolution that was adopted at the meeting.
The young climate activist has proposed a resolution Disha RaviFrom India and Durlabh AshokPakistan stated that they were distressed that South Asia’s governments had not united to present a united position at COP 26 in Glasgow. We, South Asia’s participants in this discussion on the climate crisis in South Asia, will resolve that:
COP26 leaders must pay attention to South Asia, which is home to a quarter the world’s population.
The burden of reducing emissions must be borne by the countries that were the largest polluters.
The development paths of billions of people who want to escape poverty and deprivation should not be seen as a contradiction to their aspirations.
We urge governments to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels as a contributor for growth and wealth generation.
To ensure that the global temperature rise is controlled below 1.5 degrees, the Global North must provide the technology transfer and finance promised to the Global South in order to unite efforts.
We will continue to press our governments to keep the channels of communication open and encourage cooperation between them South AsianNations will seek solutions to the challenges posed by climate changes.
We offer our solidarity to the peoples of South Asia, who are all facing the same climate crisis. We expect similar cooperative actions from governments, and we hope they abandon their divisive policies.
South Asian nations must take responsibility for our fragile ecosystems, shrinking habitats, and preserve, promote, scale the indigenous knowledge of their communities that can provide vital solutions to combating the effects of climate change.
We will continue to press our governments to promote the sharing of information on meteorological phenomena and disaster risks.
We see key issues, such as sea level rise, sea level rise and rising heat vis-a -vis urban resilience, water quality, and water resource management, as regional issues. These issues should be seen as such by all nations and a regional approach taken towards them.
We believe cooperation on species’ protection, natural resource protection and climate justice for climate migrants, indigenous people communities, and other vulnerable groups must transcend boundaries.
We will continue to support advocacy and activism to engage decision-makers to ensure that the cooperative protocols that have been established are not reversed.
At global forums such as the COP26, South Asia’s voices must be heard and listened to.
The potential for climate sanity is in the human capital of the South Asian Region. We encourage our governments to cooperate in this effort. The world must provide leverage.
