Embracing social change

Since over 40 years Maude BarlowShe has been a great supporter of important causes and helped vulnerable populations by her incredible generosity and keen interest.

This activist, who holds an undergraduate degree in history, quickly became well-known for her exceptional communication skills and her ability to defend the causes she cares about. Maude BarlowShe was originally an advocate for women’s right, but she gradually switched her focus to defending water access as a human right. In 1988, she was instrumental in the founding of the Council of CanadiansShe served as a volunteer chair for the organization for nearly 30 years.

In 2008, she was named Senior Advisor on water to Father Miguel d’Escoto Brockman (then president of the United Nations General Assembly. She fought with him for universal recognition of the human right to water, and for inclusion in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 2010 Maude BarlowAttended the Assembly vote to recognize human rights to water and sanitation.
