“Canada The United StatesWe have a long history working together on issues that impact the well-being and prosperity of both sides of the border. Our shared management of the Great Lakes ecosystem is an example of our collective action.
“Fifty years ago April 15, 1972Our two countries, in response to the serious deterioration to water quality, reaffirmed our commitment to collaborate closely to restore and protect Great Lakes through a framework for binational collaboration. United StatesCanada Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement.
“Under Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement Canada The United StatesWe have engaged state and provincial governments, municipalities and local authorities, First Nations, Mtis and Tribal governments, industry, non-governmental organizations, and the public in collaborating to create a healthy and sustainable Great Lakes ecosystem that will benefit present and future generations.
“The Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement in conjunction with other complementary U.S. or Canadian environmental programs has been extraordinarily effective in improving and protecting water quality in the Great Lakes. We have, for example, seen significant reductions in toxic substances found in the environment that can be harmful to fish or wildlife, some of which were more than 90%. We have restored and continue to repair areas that were particularly damaged on both sides. We have also implemented measures that have led to the return of important species to the Great Lakes region, including Bald Eagles and Lake Trout. CanadaUnited states relations are strong and we share environmental progress.
“As fifty years of cooperation are celebrated, we recognize that we have a long way to go and that we need to continue our efforts to protect this valuable resource.
