The University of Miami Alumni Association has a local service program that gives back to its communities.

The Alumni Association’s Canes Communities hosts the annual UM Canes Day of Service, Saturday, April 23 at Virginia Key Outdoor Center (3801 Rickenbacker Causeway).

The event will take place from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Alumni, their families, friends, and the community are invited to join forces to improve the beaches and protect marine life by organizing a beach clean-up.

Volunteers will be needed to help with the shoreline cleanup and removal of invasive plants.

After the clean up, lunch will follow in a lunch and learning segment with researchers Liv Williamson and Dalton Helsey of Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. They will cover relevant topics like coastal resilience, climate change, and restoration coral reefs.

Jennifer Slowey Dillion (Executive Director of Development, University of Miami) stated that Canes Day of Service provides University of Miami alumni and students, their families, and friends the opportunity to give back by participating in local service activities. These projects are hosted by Canes Communities across the country and support the University’s mission to transform lives via education, research, innovation, and service.

All participants will be provided with a commemorative Tshirt.

Virginia Key Outdoor and Amerant Bank will sponsor the event. UM Alumni will be hosting clean-ups in their communities and places they grew up.

The Canes Communities members made a commitment that they would come together to help others in need and raise funds for charity throughout the year. They volunteer their services in cities they live in and in communities they were raised.

They can be found volunteering at soup kitchens, helping with donation drives and charity talk at the local and national levels, visiting seniors and veterans, or walking dogs at shelters for animals.

The goal of the project is to make a significant impact on the world.
