LAX, Santa Monica Pier join ‘Earth Hour’

LOS ANGELES (CNS). Several landmark buildings in Los Angeles will be darkened on Saturday night to commemorate Earth Hour. They join hundreds of other landmarks, cities, and organizations worldwide to raise awareness about climate change.

Los Angeles International Airport will shut down its gateway pylons between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. The 1.5-mile long pylons will be lit green and then go dark in unison to other city-owned buildings.

Airport officials stated that the event will not affect airport operations or lighting necessary for public safety.

Justin Erbacci CEO of Los Angeles World Airports stated that “Los Angeles World Airports” is proud to once again join communities and organizations around the globe in celebrating Earth Hour. “Sustainability forms the foundation of how our airports are built, operated, and maintained. We will continue our leadership role to drive our industry to a cleaner and more sustainable future.”

The Santa Monica Pier’s Pacific Wheel Ferris Wheel will also go completely dark during the same hour, with the exception of the safety lighting on the wheel rims.

Earth Hour, a symbolic lights-out event that took place in Sydney, Australia in 2007, was initiated by World Wide Fund for Nature. It is held every March on the last Saturday with supporters from more than 200 countries and territories.
