KUALA LUMPUR – May 5, 2005 – The Department of Environment (DoE), has issued an Equipment Operation Detention Order (POK), to a location suspected of causing diesel odour in Sungai Semenyih.
DoE director-general Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaffar said in a statement today that the order was issued after an investigation was carried out on the premises along Sungai Semenyih, especially in the Beranang Industrial Area.
For further investigation, he said that samples of oil and water were taken from the premises.
Action under Section 25 of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 will be taken after obtaining the results of chemical analysis, he said.
The premises representatives can be sentenced to a maximum of five-year imprisonment or a fine up to RM100,000.
He stated that the department would continue to investigate and inspect all premises that could pollute and that stern action would be taken against those premises.
Informants can be rewarded under Section 48B of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 until the offenders are caught and informants are protected under Section 50A of the same Act, he said.
The DoE received a report of diesel odour pollution near the Semenyih River. As a result, the operation at the Sungai Semenyih Water Treatment Plant has been suspended. Bernama
