Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah Shah, King of Malaysia, has asked for protection measures to protect the environment. He wants half of the country to be forested and to implement sustainable forest management practices. He also wants geoparks to be designated that are protected and maintained.

King Sultan Abdullah stated: In line with the aspiration of reaching a net zero carbon emission target by 2050 the green growth strategies are implemented to include low-carbon development and strengthening resilience against climate change and natural disasters, including geological factors.

Malaysia’s floods are just one symptom of a larger global problem. The Kings’ announcement comes as a damning United Nations Climate Report is released. The world has failed to take steps to stop and reverse climate changes. We are now on track for warming the planet beyond 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit), which will cause irreversible death or destruction.

The United Nations was warned by 200 scientists that without drastic changes, the planet could experience a loss in farmland, drought, more food, increased immigration, and more species and plants dying. Antonio Guterres, United Nations Secretary General, called the report an indictment of climate leadership failures and an atlas human suffering. This report is filled with facts and figures that show how climate change is affecting people and the planet. Global emissions are projected to increase by nearly 14 percent in the coming decade. This could spell disaster.

Malaysia is facing an ecological crisis due to its dependence on palm oil, durian, and timber. Malaysia is home of some of the most ancient rainforests in the world. But they are being degraded, resulting to deadly floods. Deforestation has made floods more common during the monsoon season.
