GRAND RAPIDS, MI Freds Italian Restaurant, Plainfield Township, offers pizza, subs, salads, subs and more in a relaxed, family friendly environment.
3619 Plainfield Ave. NE is where Fred Pizzo, a Sicilian-born Italian, opened the restaurant in 1963. Sam, his son now owns it. Sam says that the restaurant takes pride in providing high-quality, Italian food to customers in an inviting and comfortable environment.
Pizzo, who took control of the restaurant in the late 1990s, said that they were not pushy. We want you to feel at ease when you’re here.
Freds menu boasts seven signature pizzas, including an all meat pizza, a vegetarian pizza, a Margherita pizza, and a Hawaiian pizza. Pizzo said Freds makes all its own pizza dough and sauces and uses only fresh ingredients. He said that they don’t make frozen pizza dough.
He mentioned that the fettuccine Alfredo ($12.99) is a very popular item.
Pizzo stated that we make our own alfredo sauce. It gets great feedback.
He said that the chicken parmigiana ($14.99), also has a lot of popularity.
It includes spaghetti pasta with chicken breasts breaded and meat sauce or marinara. The pasta is then baked with mozzarella. He also mentioned that Penna Alla Angela pasta ($13.99), is another customer favourite. It includes penne Past topped with sauteed Ham, Peas, and Fresh Tomatoes in a Light Cream Sauce.
Freds has been in business since 1963. A new addition was added to the restaurant in December 2019. The area can hold 168 people and is equipped with 22 televisions and eight projectors. The sports bar serves beer, wine, liquor, and 20 beers on tap.
The pandemic ravaged the area and closed down the restaurant and bar. The pandemic has made it difficult to reopen the restaurant. Pizzo said he wants to promote the sports bar by providing friendly, good service.
He said, “We try to learn everybody’s name.”
