To maintain a cleaner and healthier Dimapur environment, a short awareness program on waste management was organized for traders, shopkeepers and members of Kuki church under Zakiesatuo colony. It took place on April 6.

The programme was held at Zakiesatuo Hr secondary School, led by Ronika Miachieo, environmental activist, and Chief Manager of Solid Waste Management Amos Ezung, in collaboration with the aforementioned colony Council chairpersons and secretaries.

Amos Ezung gave detailed instructions to all those present to segregate their garbage and clean up the area around their shops. He also reminded them that they should not throw their garbage into the streets or into drainages. This creates health and safety issues for the entire community. He also warned them that spitting after chewing tobacco should be stopped and that fines would be imposed by the relevant authorities.

Ronika Miachieo also took time to ask the people to take good care of their surroundings, and to make Dimapur a model of cleanliness in the future. She stated that the people must work in partnership with the municipal authority to ensure that this happens. Further adding that, “Doing something good for the betterment of society during our lifetime is never a waste of time and effort,” she said.

Zarenthung, representing Zakiesatuo colony Council, reminded the people of the importance of this awareness programme in helping them to keep their surroundings clean. He stated that Dimapur, which is the gateway to Nagaland is where the colony members have to project a positive image. He also mentioned that the colony council may conduct surprise checking and that those who are found to be flouting the norms will face fines.

The team responsible for the whole initiative also mentioned how they are transforming the dumping area area outside Kuki Church into a beautified area, and reminded people to not throw their waste there in future.

A side note: 62 million tonnes are generated annually in the county. Out of this, 5.6 millions tonnes is pure plastic waste. It is also anticipated that the waste generation will rise to about 165,000,000 tonnes by 2030.
