Tyson Foods had 44 plants recently recognized by the North American Meat Institute for their positive environmental impact. The Environmental Recognition Awards recognize companies that have demonstrated a commitment to environmental improvement through the development and implementation Environmental Management Systems.
The EMS model is designed for continuous, measurable improvement in Tyson’s environmental compliance performance. The model also tracks Tyson’s progress in reducing its carbon footprint, water intensity per pound of product manufactured, and reduces waste sent to landfills. It also helps to find ways to extract value out of secondary materials.
“It’s an honor to be recognized for the steps Tyson is taking to make a positive impact on environmental compliance results, and we’re proud of the hard work from each of our plants as we endeavor to sustainably feed the world,” says Kevin Igli, SVP and chief environmental officer at Tyson Foods. “These awards show Tyson’s commitment towards protecting the environment and making positive changes in the communities where they live and work.”

To encourage EMS improvement, the recognition awards can be divided into four tiers. Tier 1 is for compliance policies, while Tier 4 is for the highest level environmental management.
