News: NATO Armaments Directors discuss effects of changing security environment on arms, 28-Apr.-2022

The Conference of National Armaments Directors was represented by representatives from Allied nations at the Spring Plenary held at NATO Headquarters on 28 and 29 of April 2022.

The meeting discussed status updates and the complexities involved in major armaments project. Armaments Directors addressed the main implications of the war in Ukraine for the armaments domain, as well as the new requirements for acquisitions and cooperation. They shared their plans for replenishing stocks and channeling increased defence spending into other capabilities, including reducing Allied dependence upon Soviet legacy equipment. They also discussed the effects of innovation and Emerging Disruptive Technologies on capability delivery. A session was dedicated to the digital transformation of NATO and its impact on armaments projects in the present and future.

National Armaments Directors recognized the accomplishments of major armaments programmes, such as the handover of the Alliance Ground Surveillance Core System (AGS) to NATO on 1 April 2022. They also supported the Alliance Future Surveillance Capability delivery strategy.

The CNAD plays a vital role in delivering interoperable capabilities that can deter adversaries and keep Alliance population safe. The Conference of National Armaments Directors’ next meeting will be held in Autumn 2022.
