ST. LOUIS, April 15, 2022/PRNewswire–PRWeb/ The Oakwood Team recently had the opportunity to work with a pioneer in elite genetics and biotechnology for farmers around the world. Their data is vital in helping livestock owners to breed better animals and increase efficiency in the production process. This project involved working closely with the client to rethink how they could better deliver timely and relevant data to their customers via a high-performance computing environment.
Genetics is a complex subject that requires a lot of mathematical calculations. To meet their customers’ demanding needs, the client had to ensure that these calculations were accurate and reliable. It is impossible to produce this data manually in a reasonable time. Client relies on large computer clusters for computations.
The client’s computer resources are under strain due to the genetic testing. The client had high-performance computing (HPC), which was set up to handle their genetic test requirements. The environment could be improved for farmers to breed better animals around the world.
The client was looking to improve their computing environment as well as migrate some data to Azure. They needed an expert who could handle complex data requirements and was well-versed with cloud migrations.
Oakwood was able work directly with Microsoft specialists to resolve any issues they encountered during this project. Oakwood worked closely with Microsoft to modify Lustre and Slurm templates. Microsoft even contributed their own resources to writing custom scripts in this regard.
The Microsoft specialists were happy to help with this project. The specialists were thrilled to use their tools in an actual environment. Oakwood team members would break tools like Slurm and then work with Microsoft to fix it. Microsoft was a major supporter of this project.
Oakwood’s client has seen remarkable performance improvements. Oakwood continues to work with the client to improve the performance and functionality in this complex environment. The new system is more reliable and can be used in a variety of environments than their existing systems. The client can create and run entire HPC clusters in order to run genetic tests. Their team can achieve two-gigabytes of throughput using Lustre as backend data storage.
Clients are required to manage their systems less frequently than they did before.
Azure has allowed the client to free up significant computing resources. The client now has greater backup and redundancy than ever before. The new HPC environment has helped this customer be more able to serve their customers.
Oakwood delivered tangible results for the client. Oakwood intends to continue working on business intelligence as well as data- and reporting functions. Oakwood and the client plan to apply the lessons learned from this project to future high-performance computing clusters or data center deployments.
