Philadelphia Regional Center for Children’s Environmental Health to be Led by Penn Medicine and CHOP

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences funds the new center. Its purpose is to identify and protect children living in vulnerable communities from environmental exposures.

PHILADELPHIA, March 21, 2022/PRNewswire/ — Children in the Greater PhiladelphiaThere are many environmental threats to the health of residents in the area, including lead poisoning, asthma, and exposure to endocrine disrupting chemical. With The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences grants fundingResearchers from Children’s Hospital of PhiladelphiaPenn Medicine and CHOP have joined forces to address these dangers and protect children living in the most vulnerable parts of the region.

The Philadelphia Regional Center for Children’s Environmental Health is a new center for children. It will integrate the expertise of both institutions with those from other institutions. Drexel University, Temple University, Thomas Jefferson University, Lehigh University, Franklin & Marshall College, Villanova University University of Delaware. This is the first time the region has received funding for a Center for Children’s Environmental Health.

“The center is an outcome of research From Penn’sCenter of Excellence in Environmental ToxicologyIts long-term collaborators, as well as its community partners. It has been a long-held dream to bring such a centre to the region,” stated CEET Director. Trevor Penning, PhD.

The center’s mission is threefold. It will disseminate information about children’s environmental health to community members, health care providers, and policy makers. It will also develop, test, and implement new programs. It will also engage community partners and researchers to make policy, practice, or behavioral changes to reduce environmental exposures early in life. It will be headed by directors Rebecca Simmons, MD,A professor of Pediatrics at the Perelman Medical School University of PennsylvaniaA neonatologist at CHOP. Aimin Chen, MD, PhD,At the University of California, Los Angeles, a professor in Epidemiology PennAlong with the deputy director Marilyn Howarth, MD,director of the Community Engagement Core in CEET.

“This center will continue years of extensive research in both environmental toxicology, and pediatric health at both.” PennSimmons stated that CHOP and Simmons will work together to make a real, positive difference in the lives of children across the region. “We already have many relationships within communities throughout.” Philadelphia, DelawareWe will be able to strengthen and expand our partnerships with other counties and the grant will help us do so.”

The center will concentrate on four main research and translation areas: Asthma Prevention, Lead Exposure and Harm Reduction, Air Pollution, and Reduced Exposure to Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals. Building on the CHOP’s success. Community Asthma Prevention Program (CAPP).A program designed by its Medical Director Tyra Bryant Stevens, MD,It has supported families with children with asthma. PhiladelphiaThe center will be expanding the initiative to the City of New York for more than twenty years. ChesterThe program provides education and supplies to assist families in reducing asthma triggers in their homes, with the aim of improving asthma outcomes for children.

CEET’s research revealed a significant gap in elevated blood lead levels for children depending on where they live. The new center will continue to expand on the research and offer evidence-based solutions for children who are poisoned by lead. Past research by this group has also shown that the PhiladelphiaThe -Reading Camden Metropolitan Statistical Area is among 25 worst areas for air pollution in the United States. This has prompted the PRCCEH and other agencies to seek solutions to this serious health hazard. Finally, studies were done at PennThe CHOP, as well as other institutions worldwide, are experiencing an increase in disease burden due to endocrine disrupting compounds compounds found in household products. These chemicals can also be found in the environment. They have been linked to obesity, preterm birth, diabetes, and other neurodevelopmental disorders.

The center’s evidence-based programmatic solutions will be implemented across the region in collaboration with numerous community groups, including Children First, The Chester Environmental Partnership and Women for a Healthy Environment, Clean Water Action and the Philadelphia Healthy Schools Initiative. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (1P2CES033428-01) supports this project.
