Pocatello to be close to a hiking trail for environmental cleanup

POCATELLO — The city of Pocatello will be temporarily closing a popular trail to all users.

A news release from the city states that the Lower City Creek Trailhead would be closed Tuesday through Friday between 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., until further notice due to the removal of Russian Olive Trees. The trail should reopen within three weeks.

Russian Olive trees were originally cultivated to create wildlife habitats and erosion control. They are now considered an invasive species, which can harm the natural ecosystem in the area.

Crews will use saws and woodchippers to remove the trees. Herbicides will also likely be used in the area, making it dangerous for trail users. The city asks that you use Upper City Creek or Cusick Creek while the work is being done.

Crews will move further up the City Creek drainage after the tree removal is complete. This will result in similar closures.
