Renesas launches a virtual development environment to accelerate automotive software development and evaluation

Customers can quickly bring innovative software to market with a new environment

Renesas Electronics Corporation, a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, today announced the launch of a virtual development environment that enables advance development and operational evaluation of automotive application software to support the latest requirements of electrical/electronic architecture (E/E architecture). The environment also includes a Virtual Turnkey Platform which allows engineers and programmers to develop software before devices and evaluation boards are available. A Multicore Debug & Trace Tool is also available in the new environment. This tool allows users to examine and evaluate the operation and performance of their software as if it was running on an actual chip. These tools will enable customers to jump-start their development and get to market quicker with cutting-edge software.

Software design that maximizes system performance is becoming more important as E/E architecture evolves. Software development is becoming a huge challenge because of the rising cost and time involved.Hiroshi Kwaguchi, Vice-President, Automotive Software Development Division at RenesasOur integrated software development environment, which can be used across gateways, ADAS and xEV development allows customers to take advantage of the scalability offered by Renesas products, such as R-Car, RH850 and R-Car for both software or hardware development.

As software becomes an integral part of automobiles, the complexity of customers’ application software increases. Customers are constantly looking for new ways to increase the value and speed of their software development.

Virtual Turnkey Platform Application Software Development Environment

This platform consists the R-Car Virtual Platform(R-Car VPF), a development environment, and a Software Development Kit (R-Car SDK), that includes pre-tested software libraries. R-Car VPF is based uponVirtualizer Development KitsSynopsys has developed Virtual Development Kits (VDKs) that integrate virtual models (IP) of R-Car specific IP to allow for customized R-Car devices. It allows engineers to develop application software by overlaying the R-Car SDK onto this platform. The platform accurately reproduces the chip’s behavior and eliminates the need for a physical evaluation board to create a development environment. Multiple users can simultaneously develop software on separate servers or PCs.

Multicore Debug & Trace Tool for Analyzing & Evaluating Software Operation

Once engineers have completed the development of multiple software parts on the Virtual Turnkey Platform side by side, the next step will be to integrate the software and ensure that it runs on one chip. Software components share resources like the multiple CPUs, IPs on RCar SoCs. It is difficult to identify and fix operational problems after software components have been integrated. Renesas developed the Multicore Debug & Trace Tool to simplify the process of identifying and analysing the causes of errors that result from the interaction between multiple hardware resources in RCar SoCs. This allows simultaneous debugging without the need to use the actual R-Car device. This allows you to identify potential issues and accelerates your development process.
