Rockefeller Center Joins The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and The Climate Museum To Create THE FLAG PROJECT 2022.2

Rockefeller Center today announced that it has partnered with the Climate Museum and the United Nations Environment Programme for the third annual The Flag Project. This crowd-sourced art exhibit invites the public each spring to submit art to be displayed on one the 193 flagpoles surrounding the Plaza.

Artists of all levels are welcome to submit their work through this portal Rockefeller Center websiteUntil February 24th. The flagpoles will be decorated with the flags of nations recognized by the United Nations and flown at Rockefeller Center between April 1st and May 6th to commemorate Earth Day, and on June 5th to commemorate World Environment Day.

UNEP and Climate Museum will choose the winning designs to be made into biodegradable, eco-friendly flags. Rockefeller Center will host Earth Day celebrations with the Climate Museum on April 22nd. These will include a talk by Miranda Massie, Founder & Director of the Climate Museum (presented with Never Stop Learning), Climate Art for Congress youth climate advocacy project, and other activities.

Rockefeller Center teamed up with UNEP and Climate Museum to create a monumental call for climate action through public art. This collaboration also coincides Stockholm+50An international meeting will be held in Sweden on June 5th, 2022 to recognize global action towards sustainability, World Environment Day, and the 50th anniversary UNEP.

“This is a crucial year, marking important environmental milestones such as UNEP’s 50th anniversary or Stockholm+50 to gather momentum to tackle the triple planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity destruction and pollution,” said Ligia noronha, United Nations Assistant Secret-General and Head, New York Office. “This collaboration is a great chance to call for urgent actions to ensure a healthy planet for the benefit of all.

Miranda Massie (Director of the Climate Museum) stated that they are thrilled to be partnering with UNEP and Rockefeller Center on these important Earth Day initiatives that prioritize climate action. She said, “We’re absolutely delighted,” The Flag Project and other events at the Rockefeller Center are accessible to a wide public. This makes them an important nexus for public arts, dialogue, contemplation and action on climate change. It brings people together to build community around a common goal of a climate-safe future.

The Rockefeller Center’s Flag Project has quickly become a beloved event. It’s a platform for artists from all walks of life to express their visions for one Earth. The Rockefeller Center launched the first-ever Flag Project in spring 2020. It was the first crowd-sourced art project. The exhibition was created to provide New Yorkers and global contributors with a creative and positive artistic outlet while the world was dealing with the effects of the pandemic as well as ongoing social and racial injustices.

The Flag Project returned in 2021, and was presented in partnership to the Aperture Foundation, an internationally renowned publisher and nonprofit based in New York. The 2021 Flag Project featured two exhibitions: a lightbox exhibit featuring works by Jamel Shabazz (a highly regarded NYC street and subway photographer), and flags that featured the winning submissions.

The Flag Project has regularly featured artists from all walks and professions to participate. Jeff Koons, Marina Abramovich, KAWS, Christian SirianoElliot Erwitt Tyler MitchellRyan McGinley. Additional contributors will also be announced at a later time.
