Rotarians call for a cleaner environment and regular exercise | The Guardian Nigeria News

Rotary Club of Lekki Phase 1 District 91110 has charged Nigerians with keeping their environment clean and engaging in regular exercise. This is a prerequisite for healthy living.

The club took the initiative recently during the Rotary Day of service, when its members and friends walked for miles along Admiralty Way, Lekki Phase 1 in Lagos State, cleaning up the environment.

Rotarian Ifeoma Aieze Corona, Changemaker President of the club, spoke during the event. She urged Nigerians walk at least 30 minutes each day to keep fit.

Corona explained that Rotary Day of Service is used by club members to raise awareness about the importance of exercise and maintaining a clean environment.

This involves us calling even people who are not Rotarians – family and friends to participate in the programme. As you can see we concentrated on sanitation. We ensured that the environment was clean. According to them, cleanliness is the next best thing to godliness. We must instill the belief that clean environments are important.

My advice to Nigerians, especially Lagosians is to take their health seriously. They should walk at least 30 minutes each day. It is important for your health. It is important to maintain a healthy environment. This is the message that we are sending today, she stated.

Corona stated that the programme is ongoing and added: We do this all the time. Rotary makes things happen. This is only one aspect. We have basic education, sanitation, health care, and so on. It’s all about service. Rotary exists to serve humanity.

Former assistant governor of club, Mr. Kayode Aderinokun, also asked Nigerians for extra effort to do things that would sustain mankind.

He stated that virtually everything has had an impact on our environment. Global warming was not something we needed to worry about before now. It is now that something so far away has arrived at our doorsteps. There is flooding all around the place, and there is erosion. There are many climatic changes we didn’t anticipate. They were so distant and esoteric in those years when they were discussing all of these. It has now come to live alongside us. He said that we must go the extra mile to make things sustainable for humanity.

Dr. Lateef Ogungbemi (consultant obstetrician/gynaecologist), gave a short talk about health after the walk. She explained that doctors recommend routine exercise for patients because of its importance.

He said that the exercise we did this morning is part exercise for people to understand how important regular exercise is.
