SNC-Lavalin unveils new solution to decarbonise the built environment

SNC-Lavalin, an integrated company that provides project management and professional services, has launched Decarbonomics. This data-driven solution uses data to decarbonise the built world in a cost-effective manner and accelerate the transition to net zero in the Middle East and global regions.

The Decarbonomics initiative builds on SNC-Lavalin’s methods and practices to deliver high-performing buildings and developments, interconnected by smart and green systems and infrastructure.

It is being launched at a time when both public and private sectors are looking to reduce their carbon footprints. The built environment contributes approximately 40% to global carbon emissions, and most of the buildings that will exist by 2050 are already constructed.

“Creating the net-zero communities of the future depends, in part on the effective decarbonization existing assets. DecarbonomicsTM is an example of how we can help our clients achieve their net zero targets. It is also in line with our comprehensive Engineering Net Zero strategy,” said Ian L. Edwards (President and CEO, SNC-Lavalin).

“We provide sustainable solutions by connecting people, data and technology in partnership with clients such as the UK Government Property Agency, delivering decarbonization for its 450-building portfolio,” stated Edwards.

Decarbonomics brings together SNC-Lavalin Group members Faithful+Gould and Atkins, who have expertise and knowledge in building services, engineering design and asset management, cost consulting, data analysis and data visualizations.

Founded on the decarbonization of existing building portfolios, DecarbonomicsTM is an end-to-end service based on a simple three-step approach of benchmarking, road mapping and delivery of an organization’s decarbonization program:

•Benchmark: develop a carbon baseline

•Roadmap: design a cost-effective carbon reduction pathway

•Deliver: implement our carbon reduction solutions

The three-step approach is underpinned by Carbon Data Insights, a diverse mix of global open-source benchmark databases as well as SNC-Lavalin’s own rich building data library.

The result is a decarbonized estate. This was achieved by the strategy for achieving carbon mitigation from behaviour change to building retrofit interventions and measuring progress throughout the portfolio and asset lifespan.

“Decarbonomics was founded on the principle and system thinking and brings our diverse knowledge and expertise in the built environment and building together in a way which enables us make carbon visible to the portfolio level,” commented Matthew Tribe, the Managing Director, Planning, Design and Engineering, Middle East For Atkins, who is also a member of SNC-Lavalin Group.

“This allows our clients in Middle East to make informed choices about their investments in carbonization and accelerating the journey towards net zero,” he stated.

Globally, SNC-Lavalin has developed ‘Engineering Net Zero’ program which focuses on leading the engineering industry to achieve Net Zero Carbon as rapidly as possible, by helping clients manage climate risks and build climate resilience.

In 2021, the company announced its ‘vision for engineering a sustainable society’, containing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) targets and commitments to achieving Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2030 across corporate activities.-TradeArabia News Service
