Speaker Nadir warns climate change like Russian invasion of Ukraine – News Room Guyana

[ad_1]

Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir on Monday said climate change is like the Russian invasion of Ukraine – it’s a global crisis which demands strong action to stop it.

As a result, Mr. Nadir was among the first speakers at the global meeting of parliamentarians who make up the Inter-Parliamentary Union. The 144Th meeting of the IPU is taking place on Indonesia’s tourism island jewel Bali.

Mr. Nadir noted that Guyana is at the forefront of the climate crisis. Rising seas can spell dire consequences for a country lower than sea level, where the Atlantic coast serves both as the seat and the hub of most of economic activity.

Guyana experienced above-average rainfall in 2005 and again in last year. This almost crippled the country, forcing the government of Guyana to seek foreign aid to provide relief to tens to thousands.

The Speaker pointed out that the challenge to taking reliable and consistent action to combat climate change is that governments can change and policies on climate change could change.

As such, Mr. Nadir suggested to the Parliament that a resolution be passed laying out the principles and foundations for national action against climate change.

This step would ensure that, regardless of which party is in charge, the resolution would bind them to the implicit demands to act to end the climate crisis.

Mr. Nadir will be attending the IPU meeting along with Attorney General Anil Nadir, Minister Sonia Parag and Opposition Chief Whip Christopher Jones. Dawn Hastingss, Opposition Parliamentarian, is also present. The meeting is also attended by Sherlock Isaacs, Clerk of the National Assembly, and some of his staff.
